After winning the prestigious Foundation Scholarship in Trinity College, Richard placed first in his graduating class in 1993 and stayed on at Trinity to get his master’s degree in Sports Medicine. He has extensive experience in a variety of physiotherapy sub-specialties including hospital inpatient care, post-operative rehabilitation, chronic pain, orthopaedics, rheumatology, care of the elderly, sports injuries and spinal rehabilitation.
Since graduation he has completed numerous post-graduate courses in physiotherapy in Ireland, Britain, Australia and the US. He is a published author in evidence-based practice. He now focuses his practice on neuro-musculoskeletal physiotherapy treating a wide variety of conditions from the usual ‘sprains, strains, aches and pains’ to spinal problems such as back, thoracic and neck pain, ‘nerve’ problems like sciatica and more complicated issues like headache, myofascial pain and complex regional pain syndromes. He has also worked with patients after fractures, dislocations, surgeries and road traffic and workplace accidents. His particular interest is in manual therapy, dry needling and myofascial release for ‘muscle’ pain and therapeutic exercises aimed at restoring the natural stability and alignment of the body.
Richard is also a qualified PE and Mathematics teacher and a former basketball and athletics coach. In school he played representative rugby for Leinster, and while a member of the South Dublin/DFRC, won several national athletics titles, was captain of the Irish Schools Athletics Team and a multiple medal-winner in the European FISEC games. He has recently returned from living in the US where he developed a keen interest in skiing.
To ensure patients get the best possible care at Artisan Physiotherapy, all of Richard’s treatments are ‘one-to-one’. You will have the full attention of your physiotherapist for the duration of your appointment. The patient experience is one of ‘hands-on’ intervention after a very thorough assessment of the problem. Richard believes it is important to teach patients about their musculoskeletal problems so they know why they occurred, how to avoid recurrences, how to do initial self-treatments if they recur, and when to seek professional advice.
If you think you may need professional attention for a new injury – or even an old one that just won’t go away – contact Richard at 087 096 1629 or email him at
Don’t forget! If you have health insurance you may be able to claim back some of the cost of physiotherapy
