Olwyn Kearns has been practicing yoga for over 10 years and during that time has embraced how her style has evolved from Ashtanga to Vinyasa Flow. Now she is enjoying the wonderful complement to all her studies that Anusara brings both personally; to her practice and to her teaching.
Over the years she has had the good fortune to travel and study with some of the world’s best known teachers. After completing her teacher training in 2004 at Yoga Vidya Dham in India she went on to further her training with Shiva Rea, along the way doing classes and workshops with Pattabhi Jois, Baron Baptiste to name a few.
Now a mother to Maia, last minute trips to the US and India have had to end. She couldn’t feel more blessed that so many wonderful teachers are choosing to come to Dublin so her yoga journey can continue.
Prenatal Yoga with Olwyn
All of Olwyn’s prenatal classes run on a 6 week rotation. It is strongly recommended to attend a block of classes, weeks 1 thru 6 to avail of a fully rounded experience of yoga posture, breath, labour and birth preparation. After completing a 6 week course most people choose to follow on with another course and continue throughout their pregnancy. Yoga posture and breath and pelvic floor exercises are covered every week. Week to week the emphasis will vary as below. There is always the opportunity, and it is encouraged to ask questions & share concerns whether in the class, before, after or even via email. This may change the theme of the class though that will also depend on the group.
Week 1 Yoga asana (posture), breath work, pelvic floor. Alignment techniques for postures both in the Yoga room and how some can assist during pregnancy in your every day life.
Week 2 Yoga asana, breath work and pelvic floor. Understanding the muscles in the pelvic floor. Different exercises to tone during pregnancy, post natal and how to relax for birth.
Week 3 Yoga asana, breath work and the pelvic floor. Breathing techniques, that will help both during pregnancy & labour. The relationship with breath how it effects the mind/body.
Week 4 Yoga asana, breath work pelvic floor, Variations on asana to understand different ways of doing asana when symptoms of pregnancy naturally arise (high blood pressure, etc). (often depends on the group, stage of pregnancy and symptoms that may have arisen)
Week 5 Yoga asana, breath work pelvic floor – positions for labour and birth
Week 6 Yoga asana, breath work, pelvic floor – hormones of labour and birth, post-natal.
Also including in every class is relaxation, connecting with the baby, discovering and enjoying the bond that exists so early, making pregnancy an enjoyable experience.
There is always an opportunity to advise students on ways to prepare for the baby, breast feeding classes prior to birth, active birthing etc.
